
Military Logistics: Historical Cases of Cut Supply Lines

Why logistics decides wars: Stalingrad, Rommel in North Africa and the Pacific submarine campaign, three cases where cutting supply proved decisive.
Wars are narrated through battles, but sustained by convoys. A modern army consumes ammunition, fuel, water, food and spare parts in quantities that only a continuous transport system can cover; when that system breaks, even the best-trained force in the theater loses its ability to fight within days. That's why logistics — the set of activities that move materiel and personnel from the rear to the front — appears again and again as a decisive factor in military historiography.
Historian Martin van Creveld argued in Supplying War that the reach of a campaign has always been limited less by the valor of the troops than by the distance to which supply can be pushed. This article reviews three documented cases in which cutting that supply proved decisive: Stalingrad, the North African campaign and the American submarine war against Japanese shipping.
Why logistics decides wars
Logistical dependence grew with industrialization. A Napoleonic army could largely sustain itself by foraging on the ground; a 20th-century armored division cannot forage aviation fuel or 105mm shells. The greater the mechanization, the greater the daily tonnage needed per soldier, and the greater the vulnerability of lines of communication: roads, railways, ports, pipelines and sea routes.
That's why attacking the rear is often, in cost-benefit terms, more profitable than attacking the front. A destroyed fuel depot immobilizes more armor than a day of frontal combat. Stalingrad: an airlift that never added up
After the Soviet encirclement of the German 6th Army closed in November 1942 (Operation Uranus), the trapped force became entirely dependent on airborne supply. The German high command accepted the Luftwaffe's promise to supply the pocket, but the operation never came close to actual needs: the historiography of the Eastern Front, with Glantz and House among the most cited references, documents average deliveries far below the minimum required by a force of several hundred thousand men in the depths of winter.
There was no single cause: insufficient airfields, successively lost to the Soviet advance, extreme weather, wear on the transport fleet, and growing Soviet fighter and anti-aircraft defense. The result was a force fighting on reduced rations, limited ammunition and collapsed medical services. Stalingrad is usually explained as an operational defeat; it was also a demonstration that an unrealistic logistical calculation can doom an entire campaign.
Rommel in North Africa: the tyranny of distance
The Afrika Korps operated at the end of a very long chain: materiel left Italy, crossed a contested Mediterranean, landed at ports with limited capacity such as Tripoli or Benghazi, and then had to travel hundreds of kilometers along the coastal road to the front. Every eastward advance lengthened that route and reduced the materiel that actually reached the units.
British interdiction from Malta and Egypt acted on that chain: submarines, aircraft and surface ships attacked the convoys, with periods of very heavy losses for Axis shipping, as documented by the Imperial War Museums' material on the war in the Mediterranean. Van Creveld adds an important nuance: even when materiel managed to land, the available overland transport wasn't enough to move it to the front. The problem wasn't only sunk ships, but the total capacity of the system.
The outcome is consistent with that diagnosis: Axis offensives repeatedly stalled at the culminating point — lack of fuel and ammunition — rather than through a clean tactical defeat.
The Pacific: sinking Japan's war economy
The third case is the most systematic. Japan depended on maritime shipping to bring oil, ore and food from Southeast Asia to the home islands. The American submarine campaign attacked that shipping in a sustained way and, according to the records of the Naval History and Heritage Command and the reports of the United States Strategic Bombing Survey on the Japanese war economy, destroyed most of Japan's merchant marine.
The effect wasn't on the immediate battlefield, but on industrial capacity: without crude oil or raw materials, aircraft production and pilot training degraded, and garrisons scattered across the Pacific were cut off. It's an example of logistical warfare in its purest form: the enemy's army isn't destroyed, it's stripped of what it fights with.

What these cases teach today
The three campaigns share a pattern: the affected side didn't lose to immediate tactical inferiority, but because its supply system stopped sustaining the operation. The lesson still holds in current conflicts, where transport depends on concentrated hubs — ports, refineries, logistics centers — and where drones and long-range missiles can reach them without breaking through the front.
It also explains why engineers and support units carry a weight disproportionate to their visibility: repairing a rail line, laying a bridge or protecting a depot can matter more than an extra brigade on the front line.
