Categories and sizes
NATO classifies unmanned aircraft systems into three main classes by weight and operating altitude. Class II covers medium-sized tactical systems up to 600 kilograms, used at brigade level. Class III includes the large MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) and HALE (High Altitude Long Endurance) systems, able to operate for many hours thousands of kilometers from their control base.
- Nano and micro drones: a few grams to a kilo, very short-range surveillance, used at squad or platoon level.

History of military drone use
The Bekaa Valley precedent (1982)
One of the founding episodes of operational drone use was Operation Mole Cricket 19, in June 1982, during the Lebanon war. Israel used reconnaissance and decoy drones, such as the Scout and the Mastiff, to locate and deceive the Syrian SA-6 anti-aircraft missile batteries deployed in the Bekaa Valley, which let the Israeli air force destroy nearly all of those batteries with minimal own losses. The episode is considered a turning point that showed the tactical value of unmanned systems against integrated air defense.
From the Predator to Nagorno-Karabakh
After 9/11, the United States made widespread use of the MQ-1 Predator and later the MQ-9 Reaper in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and Yemen, both for persistent surveillance and for selective strikes with Hellfire missiles, as part of the so-called "drone war" that characterized much of the counterterrorism fight over the following two decades. In 2020, the Nagorno-Karabakh war between Azerbaijan and Armenia marked another turning point: Azerbaijan used Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones and Israeli Harop loitering munitions to systematically destroy Armenian artillery, air-defense systems and armor, documented in numerous videos released by Azerbaijan's own Ministry of Defense.
Ukraine since 2022
The Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022, has brought mass drone use to an unprecedented scale. Both sides use commercial FPV (first person view) drones modified to carry small explosive charges against armor, trenches or soldiers, at a unit cost that frequently ranges between $400 and $2,000 according to sources such as the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). Alongside them, reconnaissance drones such as the Ukrainian Leleka or the Russian Orlan-10 conduct artillery observation, while larger systems, such as the Iranian Shahed-136 used by Russia against Ukrainian infrastructure, represent an intermediate category of long-range loitering munition.
Cheap FPVs vs. the MQ-9 Reaper: cost, range and attrition
Comparing an FPV drone with a system like the MQ-9 Reaper neatly sums up the economic transformation of unmanned aerial warfare. The Reaper, built by General Atomics, costs around $30 million per unit according to US Department of Defense figures, with up to 27 hours of endurance, an operational range of thousands of kilometers via satellite link, and the capacity to carry up to about 1,700 kilograms of weapons and sensors. An FPV drone, by contrast, costs a few hundred dollars, has a range of a few kilometers, minutes of endurance and a payload of one or two kilograms, but is used in such volume that its attrition rate — the proportion of units lost per mission — is affordable even when very high, something unthinkable with a high-end system.

The proliferation of cheap drones doesn't replace high-end systems; it creates a layered architecture: low-cost FPVs and loitering munitions operate on the immediate front with high attrition rates, while MALE/HALE systems maintain persistent surveillance and longer-range, more precise strike capability where the air-defense environment allows it. Analysts at RUSI and the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) agree that this combination has drastically lowered the entry cost for reconnaissance and precision-strike capabilities, democratizing tools that a generation ago were within reach of only a handful of advanced militaries.
