Are there multiple internets? Separated military networks

“Military internet” can sound like an alternative worldwide web. JWICS, SIPRNet and NIPRNet are instead US Department of Defense networks using IP technologies over controlled infrastructure and gateways. Their separation reflects classification and mission, not several competing public internets.

NIPRNet: unclassified work

NIPRNet carries unclassified but often sensitive administrative, logistical and operational traffic. It can provide controlled access to the public internet, while DoD policies and defences distinguish it from an ordinary civilian connection.

SIPRNet: secret information

SIPRNet handles information classified up to SECRET and links authorised commands, units and agencies. Separation reduces direct exposure, but does not replace identity, device and document controls.

JWICS: highly classified intelligence

JWICS primarily supports TOP SECRET and Sensitive Compartmented Information across the intelligence community. Access requires clearance, need to know and accredited systems. It is a network hosting many services, not one giant classified database.

Separation is not invulnerability

The Manning, Snowden and Teixeira disclosures illustrate insider risk: authorised people may misuse access or move material outside approved channels. Isolation addresses some external threats while placing greater weight on credentials, monitoring and human handling.

All three sit within the Department of Defense Information Network. Separate domains permit work at different sensitivity levels but require controlled processes when information crosses boundaries. “More than one internet” is therefore a useful metaphor, not a precise technical description.
