75th Ranger Regiment: History and Assault Force Role

· By Archivo Bélico editorial team · Updated

The lineage of the 75th Ranger Regiment, from Rogers and Darby’s battalions to the modern unit, explained through official history rather than mythology.

The modern 75th Ranger Regiment is a U.S. Army formation, but the term ranger spans different periods and organisations that did not form one continuous unit. Its official history combines colonial traditions, Second World War formations and the reorganisation of forces raised from the 1970s onward.

Lineage and memory

Robert Rogers

During the French and Indian War, Rogers’ Rangers developed frontier patrolling practices and left rules that became part of ranger identity. They are a claimed tradition, not the same administrative organisation that exists today.

Darby’s Rangers

The 1st Ranger Battalion was activated in 1942 under William O. Darby and fought in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. Further battalions followed its model. Their record included success and devastating loss, notably at Cisterna in 1944.

Merrill’s Marauders

The 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional) fought in Burma in 1944. Its exhausting campaign and lineage became central to the designation of the 75th Infantry and later the Ranger regiment.

From Vietnam to the regiment

Ranger companies operated in Vietnam. The 1st and 2nd battalions were activated in 1974 and the 3rd followed in 1984. The regimental structure was consolidated in 1986. Its public mission stresses assault operations and support to special operations, without providing a basis for detailing current procedures.

What makes the role distinct

Institutionally, the regiment supplies highly ready light infantry within Army special operations forces. It should not be confused with the Ranger Course: the latter is a leadership course open to personnel from different units, while the regiment is an operational organisation.

Frequently asked questions

Does every soldier with a Ranger tab belong to the 75th Ranger Regiment?
No. The tab shows completion of Ranger School; serving in the regiment means assignment to the organisation and completion of its own process.
Was Merrill’s Marauders the 75th Ranger Regiment?
It was a Second World War unit whose lineage was incorporated into the 75th Infantry and forms part of the modern regiment’s official heritage.
