What Escorts an Aircraft Carrier: The Strike Group

An aircraft carrier never sails alone. How a carrier strike group is composed: escort destroyers, attack submarines, supply ships and layered defence.
An aircraft carrier is, on its own, an extraordinarily valuable and relatively defenceless target: it carries few weapons systems of its own, and its combat power lies entirely in the aircraft it embarks. That is why it never operates in isolation. It sails at the centre of a formation — the carrier strike group, in US terminology — whose job is to sustain it, protect it and extend its reach.
The typical composition
The standard US Navy configuration, which serves as a reference given its size and the amount of documentation available, includes the carrier and its embarked air wing, a surface escort command with destroyers and sometimes cruisers, one or two attack submarines and logistics ships from the Military Sealift Command. The usual figure is between four and seven warships around the carrier, with roughly 7,500 personnel across the whole group.
- Aircraft carrier: flight platform, aviation fuel, ordnance and command of the group.
- Embarked air wing: around 60-70 aircraft — multirole fighters, electronic warfare aircraft, an early-warning aircraft with a rotating radar, anti-submarine and rescue helicopters and, in recent years, unmanned tankers.
- Arleigh Burke-class destroyers: anti-air and anti-missile escort with the Aegis system, as well as land-attack cruise missiles.
- Nuclear attack submarine: forward reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare; its presence is rarely confirmed publicly.
- Replenishment ship: fuel, ammunition, provisions and spare parts at sea, the element that determines how long the group can remain deployed.
Layered defence
Protection of the carrier is organised in concentric rings, each relying on a different asset and a different reaction time. This is probably the most useful idea for understanding why the escort is composed the way it is.
The outer layer, hundreds of kilometres out, consists of the early-warning aircraft and fighters on combat air patrol: their mission is to detect and intercept launch platforms — aircraft, ships — before they can fire. The middle layer belongs to the destroyers, whose radars and long- and medium-range missiles engage projectiles already launched. The inner layer is the ship's own self-defence: short-range missiles, rapid-fire guns and electronic and decoy countermeasures. Underwater, the escorting submarine, helicopters and towed sonars form an anti-submarine layer that operates in parallel with all the others.
The logic of these layers is cumulative: none is 100% reliable, but the probability of an attack getting through all of them falls multiplicatively. Their weak point is saturation, that is, presenting more simultaneous targets than there are available interceptors, which is exactly the approach behind the anti-access doctrines developed by China and Russia.
Other navies, other scales
The model is replicated on a smaller scale in other fleets. The British group around HMS Queen Elizabeth deployed in 2021 combined Type 45 destroyers, Type 23 frigates, an attack submarine, logistics ships and units contributed by the United States and the Netherlands. The French Charles de Gaulle sails with air-defence frigates, an attack submarine and a fleet tanker. The composition varies, but the functions — warning, air defence, anti-submarine warfare, logistics — are the same across all of them.

The debate over vulnerability
For more than a decade, analyses from CSIS, the Naval War College and the Congressional Research Service have debated whether the proliferation of long-range ballistic and anti-ship cruise missiles — the most cited case being China's DF-21D and DF-26 family — makes it untenable to operate carrier strike groups near defended coastlines. Supporters of the carrier respond that the detection, identification and tracking chain required to hit a moving ship a thousand kilometres away is more fragile than the missile itself, and that this is where the real contest is decided.
The debate remains unresolved, and this article does not attempt to settle it: it simply describes why the carrier strike group is composed the way it is and what role each piece plays.
